Work in Progress: Rock Pools (Stage 5)
I’ve added a figure in the right foreground area of the painting. Hopefully this will help the composition as this was an empty area before.
Sky, hills and sea are quickly blocked in. The drawing on the foreground nerds to be accurate, so I’m taking my time with it
Seascape Painting by J Reynolds, originally uploaded by noble gallery.
I often surf through the images on www.flickr.com just looking for images that capture my imagination. A few weeks ago I came up on this painting of a ship. I really like the naive style, bright colours and simple [...]
I’m often asked if I do commissions, and yes, I do. Here’s a painting I was commissioned to paint a couple of years ago - a view of Grasmere in the English Lake District. Its a long time since I finished the painting but I stumbled on this photo of it today and was pleased [...]
Here’s a time-lapse video of one of my paintings. The landscape is a view of the Langdales in Cumbria. It’s been on YouTube for a couple of years and seems very popular! It lasts for about 30 seconds and there’s no sound.

Easter 2009: Painting the Sunset at Rivington
I managed to get out early tonight, packed my easel and acrylic paints and set off up the road to paint outside (‘en plein air’ is the arty term). The view from here is over the Lancashire plain and towards the Irish Sea and Blackpool, 40 miles away. Sunset adds an extra level of drama [...]
The latest stage in this commission is above. I’m still working on the lake, and possibly the boat. The outline of the hills might have to change before the painting is finished. I’m reasonably happy with the colours and composition, have [...]
Here’s the latest stage of this painting. I’ve worked a lot on the sky, the characteristic outline of the mountain itself, and on adding boats to the foreground. I’ve also warmed up the colours slightly to give more contrast to the cool blues of the sky and water. I’m looking for a balanced painting both [...]
Seth Godin has a great blog entry called I Need to Build a House, What Kind of Hammer Should I Buy?
I guess many artists are guilty of over-emphasising the importance of the equipment they use. It reminds me that you [...]
